The air in the greenhouse, usually a symphony of damp earth and jasmine, had begun to hum with a discordant note. Elara felt it in her bones, a tremor that ran deeper than the roots of the ancient fig tree in the corner. It was the disquiet of something untamed, something that had been awakened and was now stirring restlessly. She’d tried to coax the wilting silverleaf back to life, whispering reassurances that felt hollow even to her, but the leaves continued to curl inward, a silent protest against the encroaching chaos.

It was on the third day of the unsettling shifts, while meticulously cataloging the strange, pulsing sap that had begun to weep from the bark of a particularly gnarled vine, that a shadow fell across the threshold. Elara startled, dropping her magnifying glass, which skittered across the flagstones. Standing there, framed by the dappled sunlight, was a man Elara vaguely recognized from the village. He was tall, with a kind of quiet sturdiness about him, his hands calloused and earth-stained. He wore a tweed jacket that looked as weathered as the estate’s stone walls.

“Miss Elara?” he’d asked, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. “I’m Elias Thorne. I… I saw the peculiar growth from the road.”
