Chapter 6
The Toss and Tuck
After her plea, Lillypad discards the paper into the trash, a symbolic act of letting go. She then climbs into bed, pulling the covers up, ready to embrace sleep and the dreams it might bring.
Lillypad’s heart thumped a nervous rhythm against her ribs, a tiny drumbeat of hope and trepidation. The paper, now damp and slightly warped from the water, felt strangely significant in her hands. The ‘X’ and the ‘O’ were blurred, the word "rainbow" a smudged whisper, but the intention, oh, the intention was clear and bright within her. She had followed the instructions, whispered the words, and now, the final act. It felt like a secret handshake with the universe, a promise whispered into the quiet air of her room.
She walked to the small waste bin tucked beside her desk, the one usually filled with crumpled drawings and forgotten homework. This time, it felt different. This wasn't just trash; it was an offering, a relinquishing. With a deep breath, she dropped the damp paper into the bin. It landed with a soft, almost apologetic rustle. A tiny pang of… something… fluttered in her chest. Was it sadness? Or was it the exhilarating feeling of having completed a part of something much bigger? It was the feeling of letting go, of trusting that what was meant to be, would be. She bowed her head, a silent, solemn gesture, then straightened up, her gaze fixed on the ceiling, as if searching for a sign.
The room felt hushed, expectant. The late afternoon sun, now mellowed into a gentle golden glow, cast long shadows across her rug. It was time. Time to embrace the unknown, to surrender to the possibility of dreams. Lillypad padded over to her bed, the familiar comfort of her patchwork quilt a welcome sight. She climbed in, the cool sheets a soft embrace against her skin. With a determined sigh, she pulled the covers up to her chin, tucking them in snugly, creating a little nest of anticipation. She closed her eyes, willing her body to relax, to drift away.
