Chapter 4
The Watery Offering
Lillypad mixes water with her drawing, creating a temporary, colorful mess. She places it on the table, a small offering to the unseen forces. The act feels both silly and deeply significant to her.
Lillypad’s heart thumped a little faster as she reached for the small pitcher of water. It was a humble thing, just tap water, but today it felt like it held the essence of a thousand shimmering rainbows. The paper lay before her, a stark white canvas now adorned with her wobbly, hopeful drawing of an X and a perfect circle. The marker ink was still a little damp, a promise of the magic to come. She’d imagined the Rainbow Friends, not as monsters from a scary story, but as bright, joyful beings who loved colors and laughter. And what did colorful, joyful beings love more than a splash of water?
She poured a small amount of water, just enough to make the paper glisten. The ink, instead of bleeding into a muddy mess, swirled and mingled with the water, creating delicate, ephemeral tendrils of color. A deep blue bled into a sunny yellow, and a vibrant green danced with a fiery red. It looked like a tiny, abstract galaxy, a miniature universe born from her own hands. A giggle escaped her lips. It was messy, yes, but it was also beautiful. This was her offering, her way of saying, “Hello! I’m here, and I’m ready to play!”
With a careful hand, she lifted the damp paper, the edges beginning to curl slightly. She carried it to the kitchen table, the heart of her home, where family dinners and homework sessions usually took place. Today, it was a sacred altar. She placed the paper down, a small, colorful puddle spreading gently. The sight was both ordinary and extraordinary. A wet piece of paper on a wooden table. But to Lillypad, it was the gateway to something magical. She could almost feel a tingle in the air, a subtle shift, as if the room itself was holding its breath.
