Amber begins learning from Nico, but his charming demeanor starts to fray. She glimpses his true ambition: absolute power, a stark contrast to his initial promises of help.
The air in Nico’s spectral library was thick with the scent of ancient parchment and something else… something like ozone, or a storm about to break. It clung to the edges of my vision, a faint shimmer that I was beginning to recognize as the residue of his presence. He called this place his ‘sanctum of understanding,’ a place where the echoes of the world’s chaos could be deciphered. To me, it felt more like a gilded cage, albeit one filled with more books than I’d ever dreamed of.
“Observe, Amber,” Nico’s voice, smooth as polished obsidian, cut through the silence. He gestured to a swirling nebula of light suspended in the center of the room. It pulsed with a faint, sickly green glow, and within it, I could see fleeting images: a city drowning under a tidal wave, a vast plain consumed by a dust storm, a sky ripped apart by lightning. Our world, writhing in agony.
“This is the heart of the storm,” he explained, his tone conversational, as if we were discussing the weather forecast. “The collective fear, the despair, the raw, untamed energy of humanity reacting to the imbalance. You feel it, don’t you?”
