The air in the cavern was thick, clinging to Aria’s fur like a shroud. It smelled of damp earth, ancient stone, and something else… something sharp and metallic, like a freshly shed skin. Her tangerine tail twitched, a nervous rhythm against the cool rock. The blindfold Sergos had insisted she wear felt like a mockery, a thin veil over her true sight, over her instincts screaming danger. She could feel his presence, a slow, deliberate uncoiling in the darkness.

“You are… exquisite,” a voice slithered, low and resonant, like pebbles rolling in a dry riverbed. It was a voice that promised secrets, that dripped with honeyed poison. “A creature of such rare duality. Wolf and fox, you say? A fascinating blend of ferocity and cunning.”

Aria didn’t respond, her jaw tight. She could hear the faint scrape of scales against stone, the soft hiss that accompanied his words. Rory had warned her. Rory, with his owl’s keen senses and his own shadowed past, had spoken of Sergos with a grim finality. “He twists truth like a serpent coils around its prey,” he’d said, his grey-white eyes clouded with a familiar regret.
