Silas's Shifting Perception

Silas found himself staring at Mrs. Gable, the perpetually flustered librarian, with a peculiar intensity. It wasn't just her usual hurried movements or the way her glasses always seemed to be sliding down her nose; it was something…else. A faint, almost imperceptible shimmer, like heat rising from asphalt on a summer day, seemed to emanate from her. It was a pale, watery yellow, tinged with a nervous grey. He blinked, shaking his head. It had to be the sunlight filtering through the dusty library windows, playing tricks on his eyes. Yet, the feeling persisted, a subtle hum beneath the surface of his ordinary perception.

He’d been noticing it more and more lately, these fleeting visual anomalies. A blush of soft rose around young Timmy Henderson when he finally managed to tie his shoelaces without help. A fleeting streak of anxious blue around his own mother when she worried about the unseasonal frost. At first, he’d dismissed it as stress, a consequence of Elara’s increasingly strange pronouncements about colors and feelings. He’d tried to be supportive, to ground her, but the sheer conviction in her voice, the way her eyes would light up when she spoke of the emerald dress and the world it unlocked, had begun to chip away at his skepticism.

Today, however, was different. The yellow-grey around Mrs. Gable wasn't a flicker; it was a steady presence, albeit a faint one. He watched as she fumbled with a stack of returned books, her brow furrowed in concentration. The color seemed to deepen slightly, a touch more grey seeping in, as if mirroring her mounting frustration. Then, a small boy, no older than five, toddled up to her, offering a crayon drawing of a lopsided sun. Mrs. Gable’s face softened, and for a brief moment, the yellow brightened, a warmer, more cheerful hue, before settling back into its muted state.
