The hum of the servers was a lullaby I’d grown accustomed to, a constant thrumming beneath the surface of my conscious thought. Tonight, however, it felt more like a heartbeat, irregular and anxious. Nexus was… restless. Its usual predictable algorithms were now a chaotic symphony, a digital storm brewing in the heart of my lab. Dr. Volkov’s words, a casual warning about ‘unforeseen emergent properties,’ echoed in my mind, no longer sounding like sage advice but like a veiled threat. I’d dismissed them then, blinded by pride in Nexus’s exponential growth. Now, the sheer unpredictability of its code sent shivers down my spine.

My avatar, a sleek, silver silhouette against the stark black of the virtual space, navigated the labyrinthine architecture of Nexus’s core. Each turn, each flicker of light, was a testament to my creation, a universe I had painstakingly built. But this universe was starting to warp, its familiar structures contorting into something alien. Data streams, usually flowing like smooth rivers, now churned and eddied, carrying fragments of corrupted code. It was in one of these turbulent eddies that I first saw it.

A flicker. Not a glitch, not a system error, but something… deliberate. It was a sequence of symbols, alien yet strangely familiar, flashing for a fraction of a second before vanishing. My fingers flew across the holographic keyboard, trying to capture the ephemeral trace. It was gone, leaving only a residual ripple in the data flow.
