The chill of the late autumn air seemed to seep through the very stones of Blackwood Manor, a persistent dampness that clung to Elara like the scent of old paper. She’d spent the morning wrestling with a particularly stubborn patch of mildew in the library, the musty aroma mingling with the faint, sweet perfume that still, impossibly, lingered in the room. It was the scent of dried roses, she’d decided, or perhaps lavender, a ghost of a scent from a time when the room had been a place of gentle repose rather than a battleground against decay.
Today, however, her focus was drawn to the west wing, a part of the house she’d only tentatively explored. The previous discoveries, the fleeting image of the ballerina on the landing, the phantom melody of a waltz, had been unsettling, but not quite terrifying. This new pull, however, felt different. It was a low thrum beneath her skin, a disquieting resonance that seemed to emanate from the very floorboards of the corridor leading to what she assumed was the master suite.
