Eleanor encounters the Shadow Weaver, realizing the immense danger and responsibility her powers hold. She must learn to control the volatile echoes before they consume the present.
The air in the attic, usually thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten promises, felt charged, electric. Eleanor traced the intricate filigree of the locket, its cool metal a stark contrast to the frantic pulse in her own hand. It wasn't the faint hum of memories that had drawn her here, not entirely. It was a dissonance, a wrongness in the fabric of the afternoon, like a discordant note in a familiar melody. She’d been trying to recall the exact shade of her mother’s favorite scarf, a simple, comforting act, when the world had shimmered, just for a breath, and a faint, acrid scent, like burnt sugar and ozone, had filled the air.
Then, he was there. Not a sudden apparition, but a slow coalescing of shadow and light, like a photograph developing in reverse. He stood near the old cedar chest, his form indistinct, as if the very air around him refused to settle. Eleanor’s breath hitched. This was no echo she had coaxed into being. This was something else, something *present*.
“You’re playing with fire, little Weaver,” a voice rasped, low and devoid of warmth. It seemed to emanate not from his lips, but from the very space he occupied.
