The air in Elias’s study always held a particular scent, a comforting blend of aged paper, pipe tobacco, and something vaguely floral, perhaps lavender from the sachets tucked away in his drawers. Elara breathed it in, a small anchor in the swirling uncertainty of her days. Elias himself sat behind his imposing oak desk, his silver hair catching the afternoon light that streamed through the tall, arched window. He looked, as always, like a man carved from wisdom, his eyes deep-set and kind, holding a gentle understanding that Elara found herself increasingly reliant upon.

“You look troubled, my dear,” Elias said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated with warmth. He gestured to the worn leather armchair opposite him. “Come, sit. Tell me what weighs upon you.”

Elara sank into the chair, the leather sighing beneath her. She clasped her hands in her lap, her gaze drifting to the framed photograph on his desk – a younger Elias, laughing, with a woman whose face Elara couldn’t quite place, though a faint echo of familiarity tugged at her.
