The scent of old paper and something faintly herbal, like dried lavender and forgotten tea, clung to the air in the small, cluttered study. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of books that leaned precariously, their spines cracked and faded. Elara felt a strange sense of déjà vu, as if she’d walked this path before, though she couldn’t recall precisely when or where. Then, a man’s voice, gentle and resonant, cut through the quiet.

“Please, come in. Don’t mind the… organized chaos.”

Elara stepped further into the room, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. Behind a desk piled high with manuscripts and peculiar instruments—a brass astrolabe, a collection of oddly shaped lenses, and what looked suspiciously like a petrified bird’s nest—sat a man. He was older, with a shock of silver hair that seemed to defy gravity and eyes the colour of faded denim, sharp and observant beneath bushy eyebrows. He wore a tweed jacket that had seen better days, a few stray threads escaping its seams.
