The air in Elara’s small apartment had always held a certain stillness, a quietude that usually soothed her. Tonight, however, it felt charged, heavy with an unspoken anticipation. The rain had finally ceased its drumming against the windowpanes, leaving behind a slick, glistening sheen on the city streets below, reflecting the neon glow of streetlights like spilled jewels. She traced the condensation on the glass with a fingertip, her gaze lost somewhere in the shimmering labyrinth of lights. It had been days since the encounter with the man in the park, days since the fragmented images had clawed at the edges of her consciousness, leaving her adrift in a sea of unanswered questions.
She’d tried to dismiss it, to chalk it up to an overactive imagination fueled by stress and the lingering unease that had become her constant companion. But the phantom touch of cold metal, the guttural whisper of a name she couldn’t quite grasp – they persisted, like persistent gnats buzzing at the edge of her hearing. They were the echoes of a silence she couldn't penetrate, a silence that hinted at something profound, something terrifying, hidden just beyond her reach.
A soft knock at the door startled her, pulling her back from the precipice of her thoughts. Her heart gave a little jump. It was late, and visitors were rare. She smoothed down the front of her worn sweater, a nervous habit she’d developed, and moved towards the door. Peering through the peephole, she saw a familiar silhouette, silhouetted against the dim hallway light. It was Mr. Abernathy, her elderly neighbor from the floor below, his usually gentle eyes holding a flicker of something more urgent tonight.
