The air in Elara’s small cottage tasted like old parchment and fear. The blight had crept closer to the village center, its tendrils of decay now visible on the outermost fields. Each wilting stalk was a tiny death, a silent scream against the relentless grey sky. Elara, however, was no longer focused solely on the present decay. Elder Maeve’s words, like river stones worn smooth by time, echoed in her mind: *“The roots of this sickness run deeper, child. They are tangled in the unremembered.”*

Unremembered. The word itself felt like a physical weight. What had her ancestors forgotten that now clung to the very soil? Elara sat by the hearth, the embers a dull, pulsing heart in the encroaching twilight. She closed her eyes, not to sleep, but to delve. She focused on the faint, shimmering threads that always seemed to hum just beneath the surface of reality, the echoes of lives lived, of moments that refused to fade entirely.

Her first attempts had been… disorienting. Flickering images, like a poorly tuned mirror, showing glimpses of faces contorted in fear, hands reaching for something lost, and a pervasive sense of urgency. Today, however, she pushed harder, willing the fragments to coalesce. She imagined the blight’s touch on the land as a wound, and she sought the memory of how that wound was inflicted.
