The air in the forgotten ruin was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay, a perfume that clung to Elara’s clothes and settled in her lungs. Sunlight, strained through a lattice of skeletal branches, painted shifting mosaics on the moss-covered stones. She’d been drawn here by a persistent hum, a low thrumming beneath the surface of the village’s silence, a feeling that the blight’s roots ran deeper than the soil. Elder Maeve’s words, a tapestry of riddles woven with warnings, echoed in her mind: *“Some roots grow not in the earth, child, but in the hollows of memory.”*

This place, a cluster of crumbling walls half-swallowed by the forest, felt like such a hollow. The stones whispered of lives long past, of hands that had laid them, of voices that had once filled the spaces now occupied by the wind’s mournful sigh. Elara traced the rough surface of a fallen lintel, her fingertips catching on the worn grooves of carvings too faded to decipher. It was here, amidst the quiet decay, that the hum intensified, a vibration that seemed to resonate in her very bones.

She closed her eyes, focusing on the sensation, letting it guide her. It was like a faint thread, snagged on something unseen, pulling her deeper into the ruin. She stumbled over a tangle of roots, her hand instinctively reaching out to steady herself against a wall. As her palm made contact, a jolt, sharp and unexpected, shot through her. It wasn't the cold of the stone, but something else, something alive and electric.
