The air in the small, cramped space beneath Elder Maeve’s cottage crackled with an energy Elara had never felt before, a potent hum that vibrated not just in her ears, but deep within her bones. The blight’s tendrils, once merely a creeping dread, now felt like a physical weight pressing down on her chest. Fear, sharp and cold, had been her constant companion for weeks, but tonight, something else was stirring. A fierce, protective instinct, born from the desperation etched on her neighbors’ faces, from the wilting life force of her village.

Elder Maeve’s gnarled fingers, surprisingly strong, closed around Elara’s wrist. The elder’s eyes, usually pools of calm wisdom, now held a flicker of urgency. "The past is not a ghost to be feared, child," she rasped, her voice a dry rustle of leaves. "It is a foundation. And this blight… it is the rot eating at that foundation."

Elara nodded, her gaze fixed on the rough-hewn wooden table between them. The fragmented images that had plagued her since Maeve’s cryptic pronouncements were still there, flickering at the edges of her vision: a flash of panicked eyes, the glint of metal, a guttural cry swallowed by wind. They were like shards of broken pottery, beautiful in their individual detail, but offering no cohesive picture.
