The attic air, thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten summers, felt like a tangible presence, clinging to Eleanor’s skin. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating a landscape of discarded memories. She’d come up here on a whim, a restless urge to sift through the detritus of lives lived before hers, seeking a distraction from the persistent hum of unease that had become her constant companion. Beside each drawing were handwritten notes, in a spidery, elegant script that spoke of a bygone era. They were observations, musings, fragments of a deeply personal dialogue with the natural world. And then, tucked between the pages of a rendering of a delicate bluebell, she found it.
