The air itself seemed to crackle with an unnatural energy, a prelude to the storm that was about to break. King Theron stood on the highest parapet, his gaze fixed on the bruised horizon. The enemy banners, a sea of obsidian and blood-red, churned at the base of the mountain pass, a restless tide poised to crash against the kingdom’s crumbling defenses. Weeks, they had said. Weeks. It felt like an eternity, and yet, it was a blink. The gnawing fear that had become his constant companion had sharpened into a terrifying certainty. This was it. The final act.

Beside him, Bram, his shield-brother, a man carved from granite and cynicism, grunted. “They’re massing, Your Majesty. More than I’ve ever seen. His gaze drifted, not to the enemy, but to the dusty courtyard below, where Lyra, his daughter, his heir, stood overseeing the final preparations. She was a flame, that girl, fierce and bright, but so terribly, terribly misguided. He saw her exchange a few clipped words with Kael, the rough warrior he’d plucked from the dirt, the kingdom’s desperate, last-ditch gamble. Kael, with his uncanny gift for the beast. Theron watched them, a flicker of something akin to hope warring with the cold dread in his gut. He had placed an immense burden on both of them, a gamble that felt more like a suicide pact.
