Valerius pressures Lyra to betray her kingdom, promising her power and an escape. Their clandestine meetings grow more desperate, blurring the lines between love, lust, and treason.
The air in the ruins was thick with the scent of decay and something else, something sharp and metallic that Lyra had come to associate with Valerius. It clung to him like the sweat of battle, a potent perfume that both repelled and intoxicated her. Tonight, the moon, a sliver of bone in the bruised sky, offered little illumination, but Valerius’s eyes, burning with a fierce, possessive light, were more than enough.
“Still playing the dutiful daughter, Lyra?” His voice was a low rumble, laced with amusement and something far more dangerous. He leaned against a crumbling archway, the silhouette of his armor stark against the shadowed stone. His presence here, so close to the heart of her father’s dying kingdom, was a constant, thrilling defiance.
Lyra stepped closer, the hem of her dark cloak brushing against loose scree. “And you, Commander? Still playing the conqueror?”
