Bartholomew watched from his shadowy crevice, his usually stern gaze softened by an emotion he hadn't felt in a long time: awe. He’d seen many things in his long life, but he’d never witnessed such a simple, pure act of kindness. The tiny seahorse, no bigger than a thumbnail, was nestled safely beside its wriggling brood, its small face radiating relief. And it was all thanks to the young ray, Henry. Bartholomew had been so quick to judge, so certain that Henry’s extraordinary ability was a dangerous crack in the reef’s delicate balance. He’d seen how fear could ripple through the water, how suspicion could turn neighbors into strangers. He’d believed that difference was akin to danger, that anything outside the norm was a threat. But Henry, with his innocent heart and his miraculous voice, had proven him wrong.

Henry, oblivious to the shark’s watchful eye, was nudging the family of seahorses, his smooth, dark body a comforting presence. “Are you sure you’ll be alright now?” he asked, his voice a gentle ripple against the coral.

The seahorse mother, her tiny snout nudging her young, bobbed her head enthusiastically. “Oh, Henry, we are more than alright! We are… we are found! We thought we’d never see our home again. The currents are so strong, and all the other creatures… they just swim past, or they’re too busy to notice a little seahorse family.” She sighed, a tiny puff of bubbles escaping her. “But you heard us. You understood our fear. You, a ray, speaking to us, a seahorse. It’s… it’s a miracle.”
