The air in Carter’s small cabin had barely settled from the night’s unsettling symphony. The memory of that howl, a sound that had clawed its way into his sleep and then out again, was a persistent prickle beneath his skin. He’d spent the better part of the morning tending to the wounded wolf, its breath still shallow, its eyes holding a depth that spoke of ancient sorrows. The strange markings, like runes etched by starlight, still pulsed faintly on its flank, a silent testament to the unnaturalness of its plight. He’d cleaned the wound as best he could, his hands shaking slightly, a mixture of fear and a strange, burgeoning protectiveness warring within him.
He found himself drawn back to the edge of the woods, the very place where he’d discovered the creature. The trees loomed, their branches like skeletal fingers against the pale sky, and the silence now felt heavier, more watchful. He hadn’t seen anyone for days, not since the brief, gruff encounter with Old Man Hemlock, whose warnings about the forest had only amplified Carter’s unease. Yet, there was a pull, an undeniable curiosity that tugged at him, urging him deeper into the shadowed mystery.
As he stood there, tracing the rough bark of an ancient oak, a voice, soft as rustling leaves, startled him. “You carry a heavy burden, young one.”
