Chapter 20
The Forest's Resurgence
With the threat neutralized and the wolf restored, the forest begins to heal. Carter, now a silent guardian alongside the ancient wolf, watches as life returns, forever changed by the midnight howl.
The air, once thick with an unnatural stillness, now hummed with a renewed vibrancy. It was as if the very breath of the forest had been dammed, and now, with the threat vanquished and the ancient wolf restored, the river of life flowed once more. Carter, his hands still faintly smelling of wolf balm and pine sap, stood at the edge of the clearing, the dawn painting the sky in hues of rose and gold. Beside him, a silent, powerful presence, was the wolf. Its coat, no longer matted with blood and grime, gleamed like polished obsidian under the nascent light. The strange, swirling markings on its flank, once stark against its injured hide, now seemed to pulse with a subtle, inner luminescence.
He watched, a profound sense of peace settling over him, as the forest began to stir from its recent slumber. A robin, its breast a splash of defiant red against the deepening green, chirped a cheerful, unburdened melody from a nearby oak. Further in, a deer, its fawn clinging close, cautiously emerged from the undergrowth, its liquid eyes scanning the dappled sunlight with a newfound curiosity rather than apprehension. The oppressive silence that had held the woods captive for so long had been shattered, replaced by the symphony of returning life.
The wolf shifted beside him, a low rumble in its chest that wasn't a growl, but a sound of deep contentment. Carter reached out, his fingers brushing against the wolf’s flank, feeling the powerful muscles beneath the thick fur. The creature didn’t flinch, its ancient eyes, the colour of molten amber, met Carter’s with an intelligence that still, after all these weeks, took his breath away. There was no longer fear in those depths, only a quiet understanding, a shared burden lifted.
