The air in the small, dusty study, usually a haven of hushed secrets, now thrummed with a disquiet that Elara could not ignore. Sunlight, filtering through the grimy panes, painted dancing dust motes in the air, each one a tiny, ephemeral ghost of the past. Lysander sat opposite her, his usual composure a brittle veneer, his gaze fixed on a tarnished silver locket cradled in his palm. It was the locket that had been tucked away, forgotten, within the folds of the crimson garment, a revelation that had sent a tremor through Elara’s already unsteady world.
“This… this changes everything,” Lysander murmured, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. He opened the locket, revealing two miniature portraits. One was of a woman Elara vaguely recognized from an old daguerreotype – her grandmother, younger, her eyes alight with a fire that seemed extinguished by time. The other, however, sent a sharp, cold jolt through Elara’s veins. It was Seraphina, her smile unchanged, but her eyes… her eyes held a calculating glint that Elara had never truly registered before. Beneath the portraits, etched into the silver, were two initials: ‘S.V.’ and ‘E.L.’
“Who is E.L.?” Elara asked, her voice barely a whisper, the question hanging heavy in the silence.
