Lysander’s explanations become more guarded. Elara senses he knows more than he reveals, his motives veiled in historical lore and warnings about the dangers of unearthing the truth.
The air in Lysander’s study, once a sanctuary of dusty tomes and the comforting scent of aged paper, now felt heavy, laden with unspoken words. Sunlight, filtering through the stained-glass window depicting a forgotten constellation, cast fractured patterns on the worn rug, each shard of light seeming to illuminate a corner of Elara’s growing unease. Lysander, his usually steady gaze now held a flicker of something akin to apprehension, leaned back in his armchair, his long fingers steepled before him. He had been recounting tales of the Crimson Thread, of its ancient origins and the power it held, but his words had begun to thin, becoming more like mist than solid ground.
“The lineage,” he’d said, his voice a low hum, “is a river. It flows, Elara, carrying with it the echoes of those who have navigated its currents. But some currents are treacherous, best left undisturbed.”
Elara, perched on the edge of a velvet-covered stool, her fingers tracing the faint, almost invisible seam on the crimson fabric of her shawl – a garment she now wore as often as possible, as if to absorb its very essence – felt a prickle of suspicion. His pronouncements, once so clear and illuminating, now seemed designed to obscure as much as they revealed.
