The Blight's Advance

The blight creeps closer to the village heart. The air grows heavy, and the villagers' fear becomes palpable, their hopes dwindling with each passing, blighted day.

The blight, a creeping hunger, gnawed at the edges of their world. What began as a whisper of grey on the outermost fields had, in the span of mere days, become a gaping maw of decay, devouring the vibrant greens and golds that had always sustained them. The air, once sweet with the scent of ripening grain and damp earth, now carried a coppery tang, a metallic whisper of rot. Fear, a cold and silent tenant, had settled into the heart of the village, its tendrils wrapping around each soul, squeezing the hope from their chests.

Elara watched from the edge of the village, her small hands clenched into fists at her sides. The sun, a weak, watery eye in the bruised sky, cast long, skeletal shadows that stretched towards the encroaching desolation. Each gust of wind brought with it a fine, grey dust that settled on the thatched roofs and clung to the faces of the villagers who dared to venture out. Their laughter, once as common as the birdsong, had faded to hushed murmurs and anxious glances. The children, their bright eyes dulled with a fear they couldn't quite articulate, huddled close to their mothers, their games forgotten.

Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of seasons past, stood beside Elara, her gaze fixed on the blighted expanse. Her usual stern composure was etched with a weariness that went deeper than sleepless nights. “It spreads, child,” she said, her voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. “Faster than any pestilence I have ever known. It drinks the life from the soil, leaving only dust and despair.”
