The air in the hidden chamber thrummed, thick with the scent of dust and dried herbs, and something else—something ancient and alive. Elara’s fingers, usually so nimble, trembled as they guided the shuttle, the crimson thread a fiery serpent against the dull grey of the warp. Outside, the blight clawed at the edges of their world, a hungry shadow that had already stolen the laughter from the children’s games and the songs from the birds’ throats. Here, however, in the heart of the earth, a different kind of magic was stirring.

Elder Maeve watched, her gaze a steady anchor in the swirling chaos. She had spoken of the Crimson Thread, of its power to bind and protect, of the lineage that traced back to the very weavers who had first sung it into existence. Now, that song was Elara’s to sing, her hands the conduits for a power that had slumbered for generations. The loom, unearthed from its dusty slumber, felt like a living thing beneath Elara’s touch, its ancient wood warm and resonant. The patterns, etched into the very fabric of the chamber’s walls, seemed to whisper their secrets, guiding her hands through movements she’d never known.

“Faster, child,” Maeve’s voice was a low murmur, like wind through dry reeds. “The darkness does not wait.”
