The air in the bustling marketplace of Oakhaven usually hummed with the cheerful cacophony of vendors hawking their wares and townsfolk haggling over prices. Today, however, a different kind of sound was beginning to weave its way through the usual din: whispers. They were low, furtive, and laced with a fear that made the hairs on the back of Boy’s neck prickle. He was leaning against a fruit stall, idly conjuring a perfectly ripe apple out of thin air – a skill he’d perfected to avoid the indignity of actually paying for produce – when he first noticed it.
