Chapter 19
Eldrin's Knowing Smile
Professor Eldrin observes Boy's quiet return to normalcy with a knowing smile. He sees the young creator embracing his power responsibly, ready for whatever future challenges may arise.
Professor Eldrin watched from his study window, a half-eaten crumpet perched precariously on a stack of ancient tomes. Below, in the sprawling courtyard of the Academy of Arcane Arts, Boy was at it again. Not with world-shattering explosions or the summoning of celestial beings, oh no. Boy, the boy who had stared down the gaping maw of the Shadow Maw and lived to tell the tale (mostly, and with a few embarrassing singe marks on his favorite tunic), was meticulously constructing a miniature, fully functional replica of a windmill. Out of what, Eldrin couldn't quite tell. It looked suspiciously like enchanted cheese.
A slow smile spread across the professor’s face, crinkling the corners of his eyes. It was a smile that held the quiet satisfaction of a gardener who’d just witnessed a particularly stubborn weed finally bloom into a rose, albeit a slightly odd, cheesy rose. Boy had returned, not with fanfare, but with a quiet sigh and an almost desperate desire to blend back into the tapestry of everyday life. The near-death experience, the humbling defeat at the claws of the Shadow Maw, had done more than just scar his ego; it had forged a new understanding within him. The raw, untamed power that had once felt like an endless wellspring now felt like a delicate, intricate mechanism, one that required not just force, but finesse.
Eldrin took a bite of his crumpet, the buttery crunch echoing in the otherwise silent room. He’d seen it in Boy’s eyes after the beast had retreated, licking its wounds (and, Eldrin suspected, its ego). It wasn’t the fear of death that had truly struck Boy, but the stark realization of his own limitations. He’d thrown everything he had at the Shadow Maw, a dazzling, chaotic display of creation, and it had barely made a dent. The beast had been more of a force of nature than a creature, a manifestation of pure, unadulterated destruction that seemed to feed on precisely the kind of reckless abandon Boy had initially employed.
