The air crackled, not with the usual arcane fury Boy was accustomed to, but with a palpable, suffocating dread. The Shadow Maw, a swirling vortex of obsidian teeth and gnashing maw, loomed before him, its hunger a tangible force that made the very stones beneath his feet tremble. He’d faced it before, and it had nearly chewed him into oblivion. This time, though, things were… different. He’d spent weeks in the quiet solitude of his workshop, the scent of ozone and hot metal his constant companion. Professor Eldrin’s exasperated sighs and Grumble’s predictable grumbling had faded into the background noise of his life, replaced by the rhythmic clang of hammer on anvil and the hum of nascent enchantments.

Boy adjusted the slightly-too-tight leather straps on his forearms, a new creation he’d whipped up. They weren’t particularly flashy, no glowing runes or intricate filigree. Just sturdy leather, reinforced with a whisper-thin layer of magically hardened obsidian. He’d spent a good hour trying to make them look *cool*, but in the end, practicality had won out. His previous encounter with the Maw had taught him that looking cool didn't exactly help when your arm was about to become a demon’s toothpick.

“Alright, you overgrown, existential void,” Boy muttered, his voice surprisingly calm, almost bored. He’d practiced this line in front of a cracked mirror for a solid twenty minutes, and it still felt a little forced. “Let’s get this over with.”
