Chapter 9
A Roman Riddle
Thomas opens his textbook to the Roman Empire. He finds himself in the bustling Forum, overhearing senators debate laws, feeling the weight of their decisions.
Thomas’s fingers, sticky with the remnants of a guava he’d swiped from the kitchen counter, traced the worn, faded cover of his history textbook. Chapter 8, “The Rise of Empires,” had been a whirlwind of dust and distant shouts, of shaking hands and the chilling quiet of a battlefield. He’d seen men, not just names on a page, but men who were *scared*, men who were *hungry*, men who fought for reasons far more tangled than a simple date. He’d even heard a voice, ancient and rough as a rhinoceros hide, tell him they weren’t just dates, but people. Real people.
He flipped the page, his heart thrumming with a newfound, albeit slightly nervous, excitement. The scent of old paper and something faintly metallic, like a coin left too long in a sweaty palm, filled his nostrils. The words swam into focus: “The Roman Empire – A Civilization of Laws and Legions.” Suddenly, the familiar weight of the textbook felt different, less like a burden of rote memorization and more like a portal.
His bedroom walls dissolved, replaced by the dazzling, blinding glare of a Mediterranean sun. The air, thick with the mingled aromas of roasting meat, strong wine, and something vaguely unpleasant he suspected was overflowing latrines, pressed in on him. He wasn’t on his bed anymore. He was standing on smooth, worn stone, surrounded by a throng of people whose robes billowed around their ankles. Towering marble columns, impossibly white and intricately carved, scraped the impossibly blue sky. This was no dusty battlefield; this was a city alive, breathing, and utterly, magnificently Roman.
