The next day, Mr. Abernathy asks about the Bambatha Rebellion. Thomas stands, no longer mumbling dates, but explaining the man and his struggles.

The morning sun, that notorious enemy of sleep and friend of history lessons, streamed through the dusty panes of Mr. Abernathy’s classroom. Thomas blinked, a little slower than usual. The scent of chalk and old paper was familiar, comforting even, now. It was no longer just the smell of boredom; it was the smell of possibility. He’d slept surprisingly well, the lingering echoes of thundering shields and the scratchy wool of a soldier’s uniform still vibrating in his memory.

Mr. Abernathy, a man whose stern countenance seemed perpetually etched with the weight of a thousand forgotten dates, tapped his pointer against the blackboard. The rhythmic *tap-tap-tap* was usually a signal for Thomas’s brain to go on holiday. But today, it was a drumbeat, a call to attention.

“Right then, class,” Mr. Abernathy announced, his voice a gravelly rumble that could curdle milk. “Yesterday, we covered the Second Anglo-Boer War. Today, we move on. Who can tell me,” he paused for dramatic effect, his eyes sweeping across the rows of young faces, “when the Bambatha Rebellion took place?”
