Thomas’s head buzzed, not with the usual post-history-lesson doldrums, but with a peculiar, almost electric hum. The classroom, with its predictable wood-paneled walls and the ever-present scent of chalk dust, felt… thin. As if it were a mere suggestion of reality, a flimsy curtain that could be pulled aside at any moment. He’d just aced Mr. Abernathy’s pop quiz, not by reciting dry facts, but by explaining *why* the Zulu warriors had developed the bullhorn formation. He’d described the gnawing hunger, the prickle of fear, the sheer, brilliant cunning that had driven Shaka’s impis. Mr. Abernathy, for the first time ever, had looked less like a grumpy badger and more like a slightly bewildered owl.
But now, as the final bell’s shrill cry echoed through the corridors, Thomas felt a new kind of itch, a restless energy that had nothing to do with homework. He was still sitting at his desk, the afternoon sun slanting across the worn wood, but something was different. The sunlight seemed to shimmer, to fracture into a million tiny pieces. The familiar hum in his head intensified, morphing into a low thrum, like a distant, colossal engine.
He blinked, and the classroom dissolved.
