The familiar weight of the history textbook settled on Thomas’s lap, a comforting, if slightly dusty, presence. He’d discovered, much to his astonishment and Mr. Abernathy’s bafflement, that the book was less a collection of dry facts and more a portal. A portal to *now*, to *then*, to the very heart of events that had once seemed as distant and uninteresting as a particularly dull Tuesday afternoon. Today, the chapter title shimmered with an exotic promise: “The Silk Road’s Secrets.”

He’d braced himself, a little thrill of anticipation bubbling in his chest, for whatever journey awaited. He’d seen Zulus charge, smelt the acrid smoke of France, and even glimpsed the gleaming armour of Roman legionaries. What could the Silk Road possibly offer that wasn’t just… more sand and camels? He’d barely scanned the accompanying illustration – a rather smudged drawing of a caravan – when the familiar tingle began behind his eyes. The edges of his bedroom blurred, and the scent of old paper was replaced by something far more invigorating: spices, dust, and the faint, musky aroma of animal hides.
