Thomas’s textbook lay open on his lap, a familiar, slightly musty smell wafting from its pages. It was a Tuesday, the kind of Tuesday that felt like a Monday’s less exciting cousin. Mr. Abernathy’s voice droned on about the Ptolemaic dynasty, a string of names and dates that swam before Thomas’s eyes like particularly dull tadpoles. He’d already visited Shaka’s formidable army and a mud-splattered trench in France. He’d even felt the chill of a Roman gladiator’s fear. History, he’d discovered, was less about dusty facts and more about the thumping heartbeats of people long gone. But today’s lesson felt… flat. He’d been hoping for a Roman chariot race, or perhaps a knight jousting. Instead, it was all about ancient Egyptian rulers and their… well, their ruling.

He traced a finger over a faded illustration of a woman with striking kohl-lined eyes and an elaborate headdress. Cleopatra. The name itself conjured images of grand palaces and, Thomas suspected, a fair bit of drama. He’d read about her in a fleeting mention during his Roman adventures, a queen who’d charmed Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. But Mr. Abernathy was going into the nitty-gritty of her reign, the alliances, the treaties, the sheer headache of keeping a kingdom afloat when powerful empires were circling like hungry jackals.

“And so,” Mr. Abernathy declared, tapping his chalk against the blackboard, “Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of Egypt, cleverly leveraged her relationships with Rome to secure her throne. Her reign was marked by political maneuvering and a keen understanding of power dynamics.”
