The hum of my laptop was a low thrum against the thrumming in my own chest. I’d been holed up in my cramped apartment for days, the Chronicle spread across my desk like a battlefield map. My father’s study was a sanctuary of quiet order, a stark contrast to the digital chaos of my own world. Books lined every wall, their spines a testament to a lifetime of rigorous study. Sunlight, softened by the sheer curtains, illuminated dust motes dancing in the air, like tiny, forgotten stocks rising and falling. Dad looked up from a weighty tome on Byzantine economics, his brow furrowed in concentration, then smoothed into a warm, if slightly surprised, smile.
“Elias! To what do I owe this pleasure? You’re usually buried in your spreadsheets.” He gestured to the worn leather armchair opposite his desk. “Come, sit. You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
