Below us, spread out on a makeshift table of crates and fallen plaster, lay the Chronicle, its ancient pages glowing faintly in the single beam of my flashlight. Beside it, an array of screens flickered, each displaying a different market index, all teetering on the precipice. This was it. The tipping point.

Silas Vane stood across from me, his silhouette sharp against the shattered dome that framed a bruised, star-dusted sky. He wasn’t the menacing figure I’d imagined from the brief glimpses in the Chronicle; he was almost… ordinary. Dressed in a tailored suit, his hands clasped calmly behind his back, he exuded an unnerving stillness that was more chilling than any roar.

“You’ve made a remarkable journey, Elias Thorne,” Vane said, his voice smooth, like polished obsidian. “From a hungry analyst eager for his next bonus to a guardian of… well, what exactly? History? The status quo?”
