The air in the abandoned printing press tasted of dust and forgotten ink. Cobwebs clung to the colossal machinery like spectral lace, and the only light spilled in ragged rectangles from grimy windows high above. I’d followed the Archivist’s cryptic instructions, a trail of breadcrumbs leading me deeper into the city’s forgotten underbelly, a place where shadows had more substance than sunlight. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of pure, unadulterated fear. This was it. The meeting. The one that could either save me or seal my doom.
A figure emerged from the gloom, silhouetted against a distant window. Not the Archivist, not this time. This person was solid, grounded, their movements deliberate. As they stepped closer, the weak light caught the glint of spectacles, the weary set of their shoulders. They looked… ordinary. Which, given my current predicament, was almost more terrifying than a hulking brute.
"Elias Thorne?" The voice was a low rumble, surprisingly gentle.
