Chapter 7
Entangled Fates
Marcus explains the quantum principles behind the quail's behavior, revealing its potential. Lena starts to believe in the gravity of the situation.
The air in Marcus’s makeshift laboratory, a chaotic symphony of wires, humming machinery, and the faint, persistent scent of ozone, crackled with an energy that had little to do with the latent electrical charges. Lena, perched precariously on a stool that looked as if it might collapse under the weight of her journalistic ambition, watched Marcus. He paced the length of the room, his movements jerky and precise like a hummingbird’s flight, his eyes fixed on the glass enclosure where the Quantum Quail, or “Q” as he’d begun to call it in hushed tones, pecked at an invisible seed.
“It’s not just about appearing and disappearing, Lena,” Marcus said, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the stillness. He stopped, gesturing with a hand that trembled slightly, not from fear, but from sheer, unadulterated intellectual fervor. “That’s merely the most observable manifestation. The true quantum nature of Q lies in its superposition. It exists, and it doesn’t exist, simultaneously, until observed. But even then, the observation itself is problematic.”
Lena scribbled furiously in her notepad, her pen scratching against the paper like a tiny, determined rodent. “Superposition. Like Schrödinger’s cat?” she ventured, her voice a little too eager, a little too loud in the hushed sanctuary.
