The fluorescent lights of the grocery store hummed an incessant, tinny tune, a stark contrast to the symphony of silence Marcus Thorne usually preferred. Aisle three, a monument to processed goods and the mundane, was where the universe, or at least Marcus’s corner of it, decided to unravel. He’d come for milk.
