The Eccentric Collector

Following a faint lead, Pendelton and Miller visit the home of Mr. Silas Croft, a reclusive collector whose property borders one of the crime scenes. Croft is uncooperative, his odd habits raising suspicion.

The rain, a persistent, dreary drizzle, had been Arthur Pendelton’s companion for the better part of the week. It clung to his trench coat like a second skin, seeped into the worn leather of his shoes, and seemed to mirror the damp, heavy atmosphere that pervaded the city. He stood on the cracked, weed-choked pavement, squinting up at the imposing, if somewhat dilapidated, Victorian house that loomed before him. The address, scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper clutched in his gloved hand, felt heavier than it should. This was Silas Croft’s residence, a man whose name had surfaced in relation to the recent spate of minor disturbances, a peculiar echo in the otherwise quiet symphony of the city’s underbelly.

Detective Sarah Miller stood beside him, her posture a study in efficient impatience. Her dark hair was pulled back severely, and her eyes, sharp and alert, scanned the weathered facade of the house. “Are you sure about this, Arthur?” she asked, her voice betraying a hint of skepticism. “Croft’s been flagged for noise complaints and… well, for being generally odd. Hardly the profile of a criminal mastermind.”

Pendelton offered a thin smile, a gesture that didn’t quite reach his weary eyes. “Masterminds rarely advertise, Sarah. And sometimes, the most unlikely individuals become the most convenient conduits for, or obstacles to, something larger. The pigeon incident, the graffiti on the bakery wall – both happened within a block of his property line. It’s a thread, however thin.” He tapped the paper in his hand. “The precinct boys said he’s notoriously reclusive. Doesn’t answer the door for anyone.”
