The rain had stopped, but the air still hung heavy with the memory of it, a damp shroud clinging to the city’s skin. Joseph Vincetti stood at the tall window of his study, the green lamp on his desk casting a solitary pool of light in the encroaching gloom. Outside, the streetlights blurred into hazy halos against the slick, black asphalt. The silence in the room was profound, broken only by the rhythmic *tick-tick-tick* of the grandfather clock in the hall, each second a small, insistent hammer blow against the hollow space where his family used to be. He turned a wilting white rose over and over in his fingers, methodically stripping away its petals, each delicate piece falling like a tiny white shroud onto the polished mahogany of his desk.
“Find him,” he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to absorb the silence rather than break it. He didn’t turn from the window, his gaze fixed on the reflections swimming in the glass. “The one who smiled when they told him.”
Tony, his most trusted man, stood a respectful distance away, his posture a study in quiet obedience. “Boss, the Messanos are locked down tight. It’s a ghost town.”
