The rain continued its relentless drumming against the tall windows of Joseph Vincetti's study, each drop a tiny hammer blow against the silence that had settled like a shroud over the opulent room. The only illumination came from the deep green glow of the desk lamp, casting long, dancing shadows that made the antique furniture seem to breathe. Joseph stood with his back to the room, his gaze fixed on the blurred cityscape beyond the glass, a tableau of indifferent lights against the bruised, swollen sky. His hands, usually steady and commanding, moved with a strange, deliberate slowness as he picked at the petals of a pristine white flower resting on his desk. Each petal, torn free with a soft, almost inaudible rip, was a tiny surrender, a piece of its fragile beauty lost to the indifferent air.

“Find him,” Joseph’s voice was low, a rumble that seemed to emanate from the very depths of his being, devoid of warmth, stripped bare of all but a chilling, focused intent. “The one who smiled when they told him.”

Tony, his most trusted lieutenant, stood a respectful distance away, his own face a mask of grim efficiency. He had seen Joseph like this before, in the aftermath of betrayals and losses, but never with this particular, terrifying stillness. “Boss,” Tony’s voice was equally hushed, laced with a weariness that went beyond the late hour. “The Messanos are locked down tight. It’s a ghost town. No one’s talking, no one’s moving.”
