The Architect of Nightmares
Elara’s eyes snapped open, not to the gentle dawn she’d begun to anticipate, but to a swirling, inky blackness that seemed to press in on all sides. The familiar scent of damp earth and night-blooming jasmine was gone, replaced by something acrid and metallic, like old blood and ozone. A cold dread, sharper than any she’d felt before, snaked through her. This wasn't the hazy, fragmented dreamscape of the bloom's earlier gifts. This was something else entirely.
She tried to move, to push herself up, but her limbs felt heavy, leaden, as if she were sinking into thick, dark mud. Panic began to bubble, hot and frantic, in her chest. Where was she? How had she gotten here? The last thing she remembered was the velvet softness of her pillow, the faint, sweet perfume of the Night Bloom tea still lingering on her tongue, promising its usual, deep oblivion.
Then, a sound. A low, guttural scraping, like stone against stone, echoed from the oppressive darkness. It was a sound that spoke of immense weight, of something ancient and unwillingly disturbed. Elara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She strained her ears, trying to decipher the source of the noise, but the darkness seemed to swallow any defining details, leaving only the unsettling echo.
