Adewale and Bello form a tentative alliance, sharing information. They discover corruption within institutions, complicating their efforts to expose the truth.
The scent of stale coffee and desperation hung heavy in the air of Inspector Fatima Bello’s cramped office. Outside, Lagos pulsed with its usual frenetic energy, a vibrant, chaotic symphony that, for Adewale Adeyemi, now sounded like a dirge. He sat opposite Bello, the sliver of space between them a chasm of professional suspicion and unspoken understanding. The dossier lay open on the scarred wooden desk, a testament to weeks of painstaking work, dead ends, and the gnawing certainty that something far larger and more sinister was at play than the usual criminal elements.
“This man,” Adewale began, his voice low and gravelly, tracing a photograph with a fingertip. “Osagie Ogbemudia. A mid-level accountant. No enemies, no debts, no reason for anyone to want him gone. Yet, he vanished. And then… this.” He slid a police report across the desk, the stark black ink detailing the gruesome discovery of Ogbemudia’s body, drained of blood, left as a macabre display in a public square.
Bello, her face etched with fatigue, picked up the report. Her eyes, sharp and assessing, scanned the details. She was a woman forged in the crucible of Nigeria’s often-unforgiving justice system, her pragmatism a shield against the disillusionment that could easily consume those who fought its battles. “The ‘Sacrifice’ signature. We’ve seen it three times now, Adeyemi. Each victim… similar profiles. Unremarkable lives, suddenly extinguished. And the MO is identical. No forced entry, no signs of struggle, just… gone. And then found.”
