A Brush with Doubt
A misunderstanding, possibly fueled by Thorne's manipulation, creates distance between Liam and Isabella. Liam's insecurities surface, questioning his worthiness of her affection.
The air in Liam’s studio, usually thick with the comforting scent of turpentine and linseed oil, now carried a faint, acrid tang of anxiety. Sunlight, once a welcome collaborator, felt harsh, exposing every dust motte dancing in the strained silence. He’d been staring at the unfinished portrait of Isabella for an hour, his brush hovering uselessly over the canvas. It was the eyes. He couldn't capture the depth, the flicker of amusement and something else, something he couldn’t quite name, that had entranced him from the moment he’d first met her.
The misunderstanding had been a clumsy, brutal thing, like a misplaced stroke that ruined an entire composition. It had started innocently enough, a casual conversation with Chloe over coffee, her cautious questioning about Isabella’s intentions. “It’s just… she’s so… much, Liam,” Chloe had said, stirring her latte with a little too much force. “And Marcus Thorne is sniffing around your work too. Be careful who you let get close.”
Liam had brushed it off, his mind already painting Isabella’s profile against a vibrant sunset. Thorne. The name had been a fleeting presence at the gallery, a handshake and a patronizing smile, but Isabella had spoken of him with a dismissive air, as if he were a minor inconvenience. Chloe’s words, however, had lodged themselves like a splinter.
