The air in the forgotten archive was thick with the scent of decaying paper and something else, something sharper, like ozone after a lightning strike. I clutched the potted Algorithmic Bloom closer, its leaves a vibrant, unnatural green against the sepia tones of my surroundings. Outside, the city’s roar was a distant hum, a world away from this hushed sanctuary where history slept. I’d been led here by a series of cryptic clues, breadcrumbs scattered across obscure forums and encrypted messages, all pointing to this place, and to the man who now stood before me.
He was older than I’d expected, his face a roadmap of deep lines etched by time and, I suspected, by secrets. His eyes, however, were startlingly bright, the colour of polished obsidian, and they fixed on me with an unnerving intensity. Dr. Aris Thorne. The name itself felt like an echo from a forgotten era.
“You arrived,” he stated, his voice a low rumble that seemed to resonate with the very shelves around us. It wasn’t a question.
