The air in the disused observatory tasted of dust and forgotten starlight. My temporary haven, a place I’d chosen for its isolation and the sheer audacity of its abandonment, suddenly felt far too small. The dome overhead, usually a canvas for celestial wonders, now felt like a cage, its glass panels offering a distorted view of the encroaching night. I clutched the worn leather satchel containing my life’s work – the data logs, the spectral analyses, and most importantly, the carefully encased sprig of the Algorithmic Bloom. It pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a silent heartbeat against the rising tide of my own fear.

It had started subtly, a flicker in the periphery of my vision, a misplaced tool, a faint scent of something alien amidst the familiar aroma of damp earth and chlorophyll. Then came the more overt signs: a security camera I’d disabled showing a faint, impossibly brief recording of movement outside my perimeter, a scrambled communication signal that lingered too long, too much like a probe. Silas Vane’s reach, I now understood with chilling clarity, was far longer and far more insidious than I had dared to imagine.

A sharp *crack* from downstairs jolted me. My heart leaped into my throat, a frantic bird trapped in my chest. I pressed myself against the cool metal of the telescope’s mount, the polished surface reflecting my wide, terrified eyes. They were here. They had found me.
