The air in the Forest of Functions hummed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the usual gentle, rhythmic pulse Alex had come to associate with this strange, vibrant place. Twisted branches, etched with glowing lines of code, dripped with what looked suspiciously like digital dew. Alex, hand still tingling from a near-miss with a rogue `if` statement that had tried to reroute them into a bottomless pit of `else` clauses, took a deep breath. Beside them, Pixel, a shimmering construct of light and code, bounced on the balls of their translucent feet, their usual boundless enthusiasm now tinged with a flicker of apprehension.

“Are you sure about this, Alex?” Pixel’s voice, usually a cheerful chirp, held a slight warble. “The Forest of Functions is… temperamental. Especially when the Glitch is around. It makes the logic all wobbly.”

Alex nodded, their gaze fixed on a cluster of trees ahead. The familiar, orderly patterns within their bark were rippling, distorting like reflections on troubled water. “We have to be sure, Pixel. The Glitch is getting worse. If we can’t figure out how to stop it from messing with the core functions, the whole world could… well, it could just stop working. Like a computer that’s been unplugged.” The thought sent a shiver down Alex’s spine. This world, born from their grandfather’s genius and now so real to Alex, felt as fragile as a single strand of light.
