Chapter 13
The Grove's Defense
Returning to the grove, Elara uses her alchemical skills and vampiric speed to bolster its defenses against Silas's agents.
Elara’s boots crunched on the dew-kissed gravel path, the familiar scent of damp earth and decaying leaves a balm to her frayed nerves. The greenhouse, a sprawling skeletal structure against the bruised twilight sky, hummed with a low, protective energy, a testament to its ancient purpose. But beneath that comforting thrum, a tremor of unease vibrated through the very soil. The blight, a creeping corruption she’d only glimpsed in fleeting visions, was no longer a distant threat. It was here.
She moved with a swiftness that defied the twilight gloom, her senses attuned to the subtle shifts in the grove’s aura. The blight manifested not as a visible rot, but as a draining of vitality, a silencing of the vibrant hum that usually pulsed through the ancient trees and luminous flora. The Moonpetal blossoms, usually glowing with an ethereal light, were dim, their petals curled inward like shy hands. The Whisperwood, its leaves usually rustling with secrets, hung listlessly.
This was Silas’s work, she knew it with a certainty that chilled her to the bone. He sought to break the grove, to unravel its protective magic so he could plunder its secrets, its very essence. He wouldn’t succeed. Not while she drew breath, nor while her ancient pact held sway.
