Leo returned to the opulent townhouse, the scent of expensive cigars and polished wood clinging to his clothes like a second skin. Silas Vane, his supposed benefactor, was a master of appearances, a man who draped his dark intentions in velvet and whispered promises of progress. But tonight, something felt different. The air in Silas's study, usually thick with the aroma of ancient books and exotic teas, was heavy with a tension Leo couldn't quite place.

Silas sat behind his grand mahogany desk, a single, flickering lamp casting long, dancing shadows across his face. He was examining a small, intricately carved wooden box, his fingers tracing its patterns with a unnerving intensity. Leo cleared his throat, the sound unnaturally loud in the quiet room.

"Mr. Vane?" he began, his voice betraying a tremor he couldn't quite suppress. "You asked to see me?"
