The clang of the market bell was a jarring sound, a discordant note in the symphony of Elara’s quiet existence. She pulled her cloak tighter, the rough wool a stark contrast to the silken petals of the moonpetal she sought. Verdant Shadows, her sanctuary, was fading, and with it, her own fading strength. The blight, a creeping grey stain, had begun to devour the glowing moss and the whispering reeds. The ancient pact demanded a cure, a cure that whispered of a forgotten herb, the Serpent’s Tongue, found only in the heart of this human labyrinth.

Each stall was a riot of colour and noise, a sensory overload that made Elara’s fangs ache with a primal, ancient hunger. She moved through the throng, a shadow amidst the sun-drenched chaos, her senses on high alert. The air thrummed with a thousand stories, a thousand desires, but it was the undercurrent of unease that snagged her attention. Laughter, sharp and brittle, echoed from a shadowed alleyway. Two men, their faces obscured by the deep hoods of their cloaks, spoke in hushed, urgent tones.

“The whispers are true, then?” one rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “The grove… it’s more than just old trees.”
